Irish Traditional Music in NW England

Info on where to find traditional Irish music sessions, events and tuition in Manchester and beyond. Everything trad, right here at Ceol Up North.

Michael McGoldrick appears at Southport Arts Centre on Tues 27 Oct. Mike, Dezi Donnelly, Ed Boyd and John Joe Kelly will be appearing at St Kentigern's Social Club on Sat 14 Nov. The special guests that night will be Karan Casey and Gerry "banjo" O'Connor. Tickets are available on the door. Download a pdf poster here. The annual Toss the Feathers reunion is 13 Dec at IWHC.
The 5th Leeds Gathering Festival is a ten day celebration of Irish music and the arts from 6th to 15th November. At the Racket appear at Otley Courthouse on Sat 7th Nov. There will be plenty of sessions and craic featuring Nuala Kennedy, Des Hurley, Chris O'Malley, comedy with Ed Byrne, films and more.
The Met, Bury has Karine Polwart on Thurs 5 November. Blazin' Fiddles are on Sun 8 Nov. Dervish are on Fri 29 Jan 2010. Scots band Session A9 appear on Fri 5 Feb 2010.

Liverpool Irish Festival takes place again from 16 Oct to 1st Nov 2009. Lots of sessions and events around the city.

 

Emma Sweeney is now giving private fiddle lessons in Manchester. Contact her on 07907 686429. Emma has been a regular guest of the Northwest Uilleann Pipers and has played in many concerts and sessions including being a finalist in the BBC Young Folk Award.
There is a traditional Irish music session at The Cotton Tree Inn, Cotton Lane which is near the Christie hospital in Manchester. It is a weekly Sunday afternoon session with Grace Kelly and friends and starts between 7 and 8pm.
The Full Set is a great traditional Irish music TV programme from RTE, now in it's 2nd series. The guests in the 2nd programme were Mike McGoldrick and Dezi Donnelly. You can also listen to other ITM radio programmes from RTE such as The Late Session and Ceili House.

The Jolly Angler session in Manchester is featured on the BBC World Service Learning English Music Directory website. Featured musicians are Mike McGoldrick, Grace Kelly, Frances O'Rourke, Tony Trundle and others. Sessions every Thurs and Sats.
