Irish Traditional Music in NW England

Info on where to find traditional Irish music sessions, events and tuition in Manchester and beyond. Everything trad, right here at Ceol Up North.

Michael McGoldrick is appearing at summer festivals, promoting his latest solo album 'Aurora' and also as part of the Future Trad Collective. Check out his tour dates on Capercaillie's site. Dezi Donnelly is also touring with the Sharon Shannon band, check out Dezi's new web site for more info.
Emma Sweeney is teaching on a new 10 week course in Irish traditional fiddle styles at Band on the Wall in Manchester starting Wed 14 April 2010. For beginners and experienced players young and old. Some experience of violin or fiddle playing is required for the beginners group. First taster session free - just turn up and try it out and if you like just enrol. Otherwise no charge at all! A higher level of proficiency and experience for advanced. If the course is not for you and you would prefer private fiddle lessons with Emma, contact her on 07907 686429. Emma has been a regular guest at Northwest Uilleann Pipers' concerts and was a finalist in the BBC Young Folk Award.
The Met, features Karen Matheson on Fri 21 May, Tim O'Brien & Kris Drever on Sat 22 May, Old Blind Dogs on Thurs 1 July, Heidi Talbot on Sat 25 Sept and Michael McGoldrick on Thurs 14 Oct 2010. They also have Balkan influenced band The Baghdaddies on Fri 4 June, French-Canadian band Genticorum on Fri 8 Oct, Chris Wood & Andy Cutting on Sat 16 Oct 2010.

The Hungry Pigeon Festival takes place in venues around the Northern Quarter in Manchester city centre during April and May. Chorlton Arts Festival takes place from 20-29 May 2010. There are a number of events taking place in Platt Fields Park; these are just a few of the smaller community festivals taking place in the area.

 

The Liverpool Phil has a number of great concerts coming up, starting with guitarist Tony McManus on Fri 28 May at 8.30pm, £10. The explosive Dick Gaughan is on Fri 25 June at 8.30pm, £12. Bluegrass Night featuring the Claire Lynch Band and Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band is on Thurs 2 Sept at 7.30pm Tickets £16, £21. Christy Moore appears on Fri 29th and Sat 30th October as part of his now annual appearance at Liverpool Irish Festival. The Saw Doctors are on Fri 3 Dec at 7.30pm, £21.50 & £26.50.

 

Legendary guitarist Pierre Bensusan appears at Band on the Wall, Swan St, Manchester on Thurs 16 Sept £12.50. Pierre is highly regarded as an innovator on acoustic guitar and made DADGAD tuning popular. Also at BOTW are BBC Folk Award winners LAU on Fri 22 Oct, £14.

 

The Bridewater Hall have a series of free lunchtime concerts in the foyer coming up. Bella Hardy accompanied by Chris Sherburn is on Fri 3 Sep at 12.30pm
Jumbo Acoustic Jam - All welcome to listen, sing/play along, or do a solo. All levels, all ages, all styles. Country, Skiffle, Blues, Jazz, Ragtime, Pop, Soul, Reggae, Irish, Cajun, Folk, Roots, Klezmer, Latin, Rock/Punk unplugged, Opera, Classical, Your own tunes, Americana, Poetry, you name it! - anything acoustic. The Full Set is a great traditional Irish music TV programme from RTE, now in it's 2nd series. The guests in the 2nd programme were Mike McGoldrick and Dezi Donnelly. You can also listen to other ITM radio programmes from RTE such as The Late Session and Ceili House.

The Jolly Angler session in Manchester is featured on the BBC World Service Learning English Music Directory website. Featured musicians are Mike McGoldrick, Grace Kelly, Frances O'Rourke, Tony Trundle and others. Sessions every Thurs and Sats.
