Irish Traditional Music in NW England

Info on where to find traditional Irish music sessions, events and tuition in Manchester and beyond. Everything trad, right here at Ceol Up North.

Becky Taylor accompanied by Paul Cowham is performing at a RSDCD charity fundraiser in Woodford Community Centre, Stockport on Fri 3rd October. The event is an Irish and Bluegrass evening and features the Shannon dancers plus bluegrass band Bakers Fabulous Boys. To book tickets please contact Emma on 0161 610 0168 or email Emma.Burke@rsdmanchester.org further information.

Michael McGoldrick is playing Cambridge, Trowbridge and Stokesbay festivals. He plays with his trio at The Met in Bury on Fri 3 October and with Toss the Feathers (see below). For other news on Michael's activities check Capercaillie's website.

Liverpool Irish Festival features a number of events including Christy Moore at the Phil on 18/19 October. Liverpool is celebrating its status as European Capital of Culture 2008.

Toss the Feathers from Manchester are playing at the leeds Irish Centre on Thursday 28 August 2008. Tickets are available from the Leeds irish Centre (tel no. 0113 2480887), £10.00 in advance and £12.50 on door. They play at St Kentigern's, Fallowfield, Manchester on Fri and Sat 29/30 August. The band members are Dave Smylie, Dezi Donnelly, Michael McGoldrick and Eddie Sheehan.

The Shamrock Ramblers (or Glamrock Shamblers) are regular favourites on the Folk Train. This involves musicians playing on the train, arriving at a pub, playing there for a bit then playing on the train back again. There are a number of Folk Trains running from Manchester and Sheffield featuring different types of acoustic music. The next Manchester to Hathersage train on 2 August features the Cajun Specials. Just buy a normal train ticket and be entertained.
The Met in Bury have some good gigs coming up. They have John McCusker, Kris Drever & Roddy Woomble on Sat 27 Sept, Tim O'Brien on Wed 19 November and Cara Dillon on Friday 7 November.
The Full Set is a new traditional Irish music TV programme from RTE. It can be watched over the net. The guests in the 2nd programme were Mike McGoldrick and Dezi Donnelly. You can also listen to other ITM radio programmes from RTE such as The Late Session and Ceili House.
Warning! Never mind Bird Flu, how about an outbreak of Uilleann Pipes, could you be infected?
Please take the time to sign the e-petition against the Licensing Act. This law seriously affects live music, especially traditional music sessions as venues must have a license for acoustic music performance but not for loud TVs, jukeboxes or Morris Dancing. Finding pubs that will allow sessions or folk clubs is now an uphill struggle because of this ridiculous law. The Musicians Union have released a statement confirming their position on the impact of the Act.
The Jolly Angler session in Manchester is featured on the BBC World Service Learning English Music Directory website. Featured musicians are Mike McGoldrick, Grace Kelly, Frances O'Rourke, Tony Trundle and others.
Back by popular demand! - the Session Etiquette page. After receiving one email a couple of years ago, the Dos and Don'ts are back.
Folk & Acoustic tour dates from the BBC Radio 2 Folk Site. For Festival listings check out Folk and Roots or Froots.
